A Sense of Worthlessness, Dislike of Self, DespairIf one is treated as essentially worthless for any length of time, one is likely to experience such feelings. People often descend on a spiral of 'Learned Helplessness', gradually becoming les and less able to approach the world or even themselves in a positive or even neutral manner. Much of this will be interpreted by professionals as acute or chronic depression and this will most often be treated using medication. Whether or not this is appropriate is open to question. As one Psycho-geriatrician noted, he was mainly employed to diagnose and treat dementias in a residential setting, and when the dementias were sufficiently far-advanced, that was easy, but in the early stages, 'You would need to be crazy to not be depressed.' Suicide is one of the most common causes of death in people with the diagnosis 'Schizophrenia'. Young men and women cast into young offenders institutions are at incredibly high risk of death by suicide caused by bullying, sense of worthlessness, dislike of self and despair. |
