(Symbolical stigmatising, ‘marking’, ‘deviancy-imaging’, ‘branding’.)

 

Marked as different by signs and symbols surrounding them.  Use (conscious or unconscious) of well recognised deviancy images.  Branding people as different.

 

Defined as their illness/disability.   Life limited by such perceptions.  Seen as their disability.

 

 
Jeopardy of being seen as having multiple negative roles, scape-goated.

 

If people are already seen as occupying one negative role, they may well be suspected of having others.  Hearing Impaired- people may consider them stupid or rude.  Learning Disabled- people may assume they are incapable of learning.  Mentally Ill- May be assumed to be dangerous.  Unemployed- may be seen as a burden.
