Fantasy and Inventions about Relationships that do not Exist, and may Never have Existed

This was very common within longstay units of the old Asylums- people would talk at length about girlfriends or boyfriends that did not exist, or about loving parents who in fact had abandoned them.  Visitors would often be accosted by patients and asked if they would 'be' their boy/girl friend.

The phenomenon is repeated within Old People's Homes where the residents will talk at length about dutiful sons and daughters who in fact rarely visit.
