Feeling Like Being an Alien in the World

This arises mainly from Distantiation- especially Physical and Social and relationship Discontinuity.  If all of ones experiences are utterly different from those of the normal or valued world, then one will feel separated and Alien.

This often leads to experiences close to depersonalization and loss of identity- feeling that they are 'no-one'

The structure (physical and social) of services will often contribute to this feeling of 'otherness'.

People who have been institutionalized for a long time (in prison or in other institutions) often report feelings of being alien and of depersonalization on return to the community proper.
